LMBA Rep Teams – Guidelines for Players and Parents
LMBA Rep Teams offer an opportunity for selected players in our mini, bantam and midget divisions to practice and play at more competitive level against other teams from both in and outside the province.
Since these players are selected to represent the LMBA in provincial-based competitions, a higher level of commitment is required of these players than would be expected at the house league level.
Before participating on a Rep Team there are a number of factors that both players and parents should be aware. These are:
· It is the policy of the LMBA that those players selected to a mini or bantam “A”-level Rep Team do not participate in the LMBA house league. This means that these players will participate in only games and practices associated with the Rep Team.
· The objective of each Rep Team is to provide advanced player development opportunities, through coaching and a more intensive practice and competitive game schedule.
Each Rep Team will participate in Basketball New Brunswick’s age-class Provincial Tournament, unless a situation arises where participation is not possible. These tournaments are typically held in mid-March. If a team is unable to attend their provincial tournament a suitable replacement season-ending tournament will be scheduled.
· Mini Rep Teams are to carry 12 players.
Bantam and above Rep Teams can carry a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 12 players.
At their discretion, and if only one Rep team is maintained in their division, the Rep team coach may choose to maintain a maximum of 2 practice players above the minimum team requirement. These practice players will be eligible to practice with the Rep Team, and may or may not, at the coach’s discretion participate in Rep Team exhibition games. Rep Team Practice Players must maintain house league commitments.
· There is no official league within which a Rep Team participates, and each team’s schedule is the responsibility of the coach and team to organize. Each team is afforded the opportunity to play exhibition games and tournaments with other Rep teams from around the province. Each Rep Team also represents the LMBA at Basketball New Brunswick’s age-level provincial tournaments held at the end of each season, unless a situation arises where participation is not possible.
· All LMBA Mini and Bantam “A” Teams can play up to a maximum of 30 games per season, and shall practice as a team up to 3 hours per week. The game limits do not include provincial tournament games or the play-off games of entered exhibition tournaments
· By trying out and being selected to a Rep Team, a player, and their parents, agrees that they will be able to make at least 75% of the team’s games and practices.
· Rep Team players have access to experienced coaching. Basketball New Brunswick requires that anyone coaching a team participating in a provincial championship to have obtained their NCCP Level I certification. This means that the coach must have taken a 2 day course on Coaching Theory, a 2 day course on the technical aspects of the game of basketball, and completed one year of coaching following the technical course.
· The Rep Team is a competitive team, and as such is not governed by the LMBA’s fair play rules. Unless covered by Basketball New Brunswick regulations, each player’s game playing time is at the discretion of the Rep Team coach.
o However, as a representative of the LMBA players and parents are governed by LMBA rules and regulations as they pertain to appropriate behavior, discipline, etc.
· There is a Rep Team fee of $75.00. This is in addition to the LMBA’s registration fee. The LMBA registration fee is used towards gym costs and improvements that benefit all players, the BNB player registration fee, Rep Team Uniform costs (which are typically higher than house league uniform costs), and registration for BNB’s age class provincial tournaments (or a suitable replacement tournament up to the amount of the BNB age class tournament registration fee). The additional Rep Team fees are used to cover costs associated with higher quality officials and tournament registration fees.
· There is a requirement for travel associated with each Rep Team, with a typical schedule consisting of 40% - 60% “away” games. When participating in travel tournaments there may also be a requirement for over-night stays. Arrangements for travel and expenses associated with this travel are the responsibility of the parents of each player.
· To help defer additional team expenses, parents may be asked to participate in additional fund raising activities in support of the team. The degree of fund-raising activity undertaken is up to each individual Rep Team.
